Retrofit Contest – Week 6 and Winners!

March 20th, 2010 - filed under Input Requested, Status Updates

The 2010 Jetpack Retrofit Contest is over!

The contest was a great success, it was a lot of fun getting the fans involved and I think we got some great graphics, music, and levels out of it. I wish we had more of a budget for this project – hopefully for Jetpack 2 we can have a new contest with more and bigger prizes to better recognize the contribution of fans.

I’d like to mention a few people that made excellent contributions to Jetpack:

Saga Musix submitted some fantastic music, in addition to a zillion sound effects and several levels.
Eric F. submitted a ton of graphics, and some great levels.
Tim K. submitted several excellent graphics
Coda submitted some excellent music
Brien B. submitted several great tiles
Adam D. had a huge number of great levels, a lot of good ideas, and is helping to develop a storyline
Joseph S. submitted a great full replacement tileset. Although not quite the style I was looking for, I was able to bring over several of the concepts.
Jonas R, Alex W, Dan Kalne, Brien B, and Juan G submitted a great variety of excellent levels.

And the Winners Are…

$50 1st Prize: Saga Musix and Eric F.
$25 2nd Prize: Tim K., Coda, Brien B., and Adam D.
Honorable Mention: The following users had great contributions, and will receive a free copy of Jetpack: Collector’s Edition: Joseph S., Jonas R., Alex W., Dan K., Joe S., David M., Tuomas T., Joe C., Joseph C., Ben T., Wolfgang S., Steven M. Jonathon P., Axem, Ben S., David C., Doug H., Matt S., Rondo B., Ben J., Felipe A., and Robert R.
I’ll put these names in the game credits (with full last names instead of initials). If you want a different name used in the credits, please contact me.

We had many great submissions, so choosing the best contributors has been no easy task. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone who participated!

A few more things…

Although the contest is over, we can still use some graphics, sounds, and music. As always, a free copy of Jetpack Collector’s Edition goes to anyone whose work is used in the game. Send any submissions to the business email here. Here’s what we still need:

Music
Some more songs to add variety to the game.

Sound Effects
If you happen to have a recording studio, we need more sounds that fit Jetpack!

Theme Tiles
outdoors
factory
space station
alien planet
jungle
devilish – bones, brimstone
A computer control panel
Alternate exit doors
Enemies – graphics that will replace other enemies while retaining the same behavior. I’d like to have at least one alternate enemy graphic per theme.

Release Status

Since I’ve expanded the scope of the retrofit we’re now looking at a release in early May. I plan to release a beta with an editor mid-April, so we’ll have about 3 weeks to update all the levels for the new game system. I’m hoping to release a semi-playable alpha in the coming week.

Woo, the results are in! I was expecting Saga and Adam D. to rank high, their submissions have been consistently really good. Hats off to everyone who submitted something.

Also, for anyone who wants to quickly play all the Retrofit levels, I made a big .zip file with every entry in a ready-to-play form (just unzip to the LEVELS folder): http://www.mediafire.com/?uoz2oqhk3lw

  2. Doug Howell Says:

Congrats to all the winners!! And great job to everyone! There’s been some really nice stuff submitted. And of course,…thanks Adam for letting us all participate! :)

  3. Dave Dave Says:

Favourite levels this week (both by Adam Dobay):
No More Candy Be4 Bedtime (D-H-CAND) – Nice puzzle level :D
Quick and Dirty (D-X-QUIC) – An extremely hard level, but at least it’s quick (and fun).

Looking forward to seeing the beta release.

  4. salaboy salaboy Says:

Guys I’m so happy to see this initiative, I’m java developer, let me know if I can help with something.

  5. Robert Robert Says:

I love Eric F.’s devilish tiles, and Brien B.’s spikes (enemy) and spikes look awesome.

Eric’s walking demon looks pretty good, but it also looks kinda funny, like he’s doing some crazy dance.

“Brien B. adds a Homer and new bricks to his tileset:”

I can’t see where Homer is supposed to be here.

Brien’s fuel looks cool, but it doesn’t really look like fuel. It makes me think of some kind of a missile than anything else. Also, the wooden column and fence tiles are nice.

And congratulations to all the winners! I had a feeling Tim K. and Eric F. would win, but I just now realized that Saga Musix was a person (sorry about that), and looking back, they did a great job!

I can’t wait for the alpha! And definitely, a huge thanks to Adam for the contest and working on the new jetpack games!

  6. Robert Robert Says:

So did we ever get a working jetman?

And there should be an airport theme! With moving walkways, security guards, out of control airplanes, security checkpoints, bombs, baggage, money, gates, communications, and terrorist attacks!

I’ve realized that I can’t do anything with graphics and have no idea how to make something small, detailed, and flash-y… :(

  7. fb707663198 Daniel Kalne Says:

My levels are dank. I’ve got some pretty “dank” levels.

  8. Robert Robert Says:

also, no offense, but the jetman in the drawing looks like he has 2 right hands…actually…yea, that’s definitely a thumb.

And Brien B.’s invincibility suit looks pretty cool.

  9. ventuz ventuz Says:

I knew there’s something wrong with picture =0

  10. Adam / Adept Software Adam Says:

    > I can’t see where Homer is supposed to be here.

Oops I left it out. It’s there now.

    > So did we ever get a working jetman?

I had someone really good working on one, but I haven’t heard from him in a week :(

  11. InsaneJetman InsaneJetman Says:

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I enjoyed making the all the tiles I did.

What exactly did you have in mind for “A computer control panel”?

  12. Silas Silas Says:

    You guys are right. lol
This happened because I’ve done in a hurry to deliver.
I thought Adam was going to end soon the contributions.
It was meant to be only a concept.
I made two separate drawings (one of Jetman and other of various hands – edited later).
    That’s it.
This never happened to me before and made me sad. o.o” Not much.

  13. Adam / Adept Software Adam Says:

    > What exactly did you have in mind for “A computer control panel”?

This would be like a console the jetman would stand in front of.

  14. Lordnikolas Lordnikolas Says:

Hello, I am of Argentine. I do not speak very well English. I like to draw … I want to send a drawing of jetman.
    Congratulations for the project.

  15. Joe Schmo Joe C. Says:

First off, thank you Adam for having this contest, it was really fun! I’d like to do it again sometime!

Second, is the Jetpack: Collector’s Edition going to be a physical copy or something we get sent to us through email (I usually prefer physical copies for this kind of thing)?

  16. Adam / Adept Software Adam Says:

If I had boxes I would send them out, but unfortunately this is just going to be a digital release.

  17. Robert Robert Says:

have their been any developments with anything? it’s been almost 2 weeks since there’s been a blog post!

  18. Adam / Adept Software Adam Says:

Ha! I’ve been drowning in bugs, every time I add a new feature. I’m hoping to finally get the new demo up tonight. I would have published last night, but when I went to build in release mode at 11pm, a bug showed up that isn’t happening in debug mode :(

  19. Robert Robert Says:

    ah that sucks!

But that’s also great news! I can’t wait!

  20. Robert Robert Says:

and i spelled “there” wrong in that last post…man i feel like an idiot.

wait…is this an april fools joke?

  21. Adam / Adept Software Adam Says:

Ha I would come up with something better than that.. I had the idea last night to replace all the graphics with fairies and stuff and say it was the new look, but alas I had the idea too late :)
